À l’occasion de la rencontre amicale entre le Stade de Reims et le FC Midtjylland ce samedi, nous avons pu échanger avec l’un des meilleurs gardiens du championnat danois et de son histoire, Jesper Hansen. En effet, le portier danois de 35 ans va faire son retour en France à l’occasion de cette rencontre, et à travers un entretien d’une heure nous avons pu revenir avec lui en détail sur sa carrière.
L’occasion d’en apprendre plus sur le développement du club du FC Nordsjaelland où il a été formé, sur son passage en France à Evian Thonon Gaillard et Bastia, et sur son retour avec succès au Danemark où il fait les beaux jours du FC Midtjylland actuellement.

Formation à Nordsjaelland :
Vous avez été formé au FC Nordjsaelland, comment s’est passé votre formation là-bas et avez-vous toujours était destiné au poste de gardien de but ?
Oui, depuis le début, j’ai commencé quand j’avais 4 ans et je n’ai pas joué à un autre poste que gardien sur le terrain. Bien sûr, j’ai commencé à jouer quand j’étais petit mais je jouais juste comme ça avec le ballon. Mais pas si longtemps après, l’entraîneur a simplement demandé qui voulait être le gardien de but et j’étais l’un de ceux qui ont juste levé la main et j’étais sûr que j’étais fait pour être gardien après cela. Je suis resté dans le but et je n’ai jamais joué en dehors sur le terrain depuis le premier jour, je n’ai pas essayé d’être attaquant, milieu ou défenseur. J’ai toujours été là depuis trente ans à l’intérieur des cages. C’était mon destin de devenir gardien. Beaucoup de connaissances ont essayé d’être des joueurs de champ avant, puis à un moment donné d’essayer d’être un gardien et peut-être qu’ils valaient mieux pour eux d’être le gardien de but.
En 2000, je suis arrivé à Nordsjaelland de mon club d’enfance Ølstykke. J’avais moins de quinze ans, donc je faisais partie des équipes de jeunes. Deux ans après, j’ai obtenu mon premier contrat professionnel à 17 ans juste avant mes 18 ans. J’ai donc quitté l’école et j’étais dédié à 100% à mon rêve de devenir footballeur professionnel. Et maintenant, cela fait plus de 20 ans, c’était une bonne décision. Beaucoup de bons souvenirs, à Nordsjaelland et c’était 13 ans avant que je vienne en France, donc c’était un endroit fantastique. C’est là où j’ai été éduqué, que j’ai grandi en tant que gardien.
Nordsjaelland est aujourd’hui connu pour être l’un des meilleurs clubs formateurs du Danemark et d’Europe, était-ce déjà le cas à votre époque lors de votre formation ?
Le club commençait juste à se développer pour devenir ce qu’il est aujourd’hui, avec de jeunes joueurs, vraiment beaucoup de jeunes joueurs maintenant. Mais quand j’étais là-bas, ils ont vraiment commencé à développer cette stratégie pour jouer un beau football sur le terrain, pour jouer comme le FC Barcelone. Nous avions des entraîneurs qui ont vraiment apprécié le style de jeu de Barcelone. Je me souviens donc qu’à certains moments, nous avons parfois été comparés au FCB, car nous jouons du gardien de but et avec pas beaucoup de long ballons. Nous étions une équipe de possession et cela a commencé pendant ma période au club en développant la stratégie que l’on peut voir quand vous regardez le style de style du FC Nordsjaelland maintenant. Je suis vraiment fier quand je repense aux 13 années.
Nordjsaelland a une grande place dans mon cœur, c’est là que j’ai démarré en tant que gardien de but et j’ai eu ma chance dans ce club. Donc s’ils ne le savent pas, mais je suis sûr qu’ils le savent, j’ai vraiment adoré le club et j’aime toujours leur style de jeu. C’est mon ADN et mes valeurs en tant que gardien de but. Et puis bien sûr j’ai essayé d’autres choses depuis, mais j’ai toujours cela comme base en moi en tant que gardien de but et c’est une grande inspiration de mon style de jeu de gardien, ces 13 années où j’ai grandi dans le club.
À Nordsjaelland, vous avez remporté la Coupe en 2010 et 2011 face à Midtjylland puis été champion en 2012 et grâce à cela vous avez pu disputé les poules de LDC, comment se sont passés vos 6 saisons là-bas ?
C’était très difficile au début quand j’ai commencé à jouer, parce que Nordsjaelland se battait à peu près pour les places de la zone de relégation, parfois nous avions beaucoup de mal à regarder les équipes à la baisse et nous étions juste à l’écart de la relégation. Et puis, à ce moment-là, ils ont changé d’entraîneur pour Morten Wieghorst qui est maintenant l’entraîneur adjoint du Danemark et Kasper Hjulmand qui est le sélectionneur du Danemark, il était l’entraîneur adjoint. Maintenant, ils ont échangé leur rôle en équipe nationale. Mais ils m’ont donné ma chance et les deux premières saisons ont été très durs mais j’ai beaucoup appris. Auparavant, j’étais prêté quand j’avais 20 ans à mon équipe d’enfance qui jouait la 1ère division (D2), et cela m’a donné un très bon développement et quelques expériences pour revenir et me battre pour ma place dans la première équipe en Superliga.
Puis, en 2010, nous sommes allés jusqu’en finale de la Coupe et nous jouions face à Midtjylland et nous avons eu la chance de remporter le premier trophée en tant que petit club du Danemark. Nous l’avons fait et après cela, cela nous a donné le sentiment que nous pourrions gagner quelque chose. On avait de bons joueurs dans l’équipe, on commençait à très bien jouer. C’était le moment précurseur pour l’année suivante où nous avons à nouveau été en finale, et contre Midtjylland à nouveau mon club d’aujourd’hui, donc c’était comme le début de quelque chose de très excitant pour le club et cela a développé le style de tout le club en tant qu’organisation à ce qu’elle est aujourd’hui et cela a changé la mentalité que nous pouvions être une équipe de premier plan au Danemark. Et nous avons eu ces deux finales de coupe d’affilée contre Midtjylland et après la deuxième, ce n’est pas si souvent que nous voyons une équipe remporter le titre de coupe deux années de suite.
C’était une sensation fantastique, et oui, cela a commencé à nous donner l’opportunité de changer la mentalité de ne pas être dans la zone de relégation mais de sortir et d’essayer de se qualifier pour la Coupe UEFA, nous jouons contre des équipes passionnantes et nous avons perdu deux années de suite contre le Sporting CP où nous étions sur le point de les battre. L’année qui a suivi les 2 finales de coupes, nous avons remporté le championnat et le vainqueur se rendait directement dans les phases de groupes de la Ligue des champions. C’était donc un bonus fantastique et une opportunité unique de jouer la Ligue des champions. C’est l’année où nous devons le gagner et nous sommes revenus de la deuxième place pour battre le FC Copenhague dans les deux derniers tours du championnat.
C’était donc une saison folle, nous étions en retard de sept/huit points et nous avons gagné beaucoup de points dans la dernière partie de la saison et sommes devenus champions. Cétait une sensation unique de lever le trophée pour la première fois et bien sûr en sachant que nous irons directement à la phase de groupes de la Ligue des champions et que nous pourrions nous rencontrer de grandes équipes. Et nous l’avons fait, nous avons eu un groupe très très relevé. Notamment contre la Juventus, qui a toujours été mon équipe préférée. Je me souviens du maillot d’abord, j’aime la couleur et je me souviens de joueurs comme Ravanelli, Vieri, Del Piero, Zidane, et bien sûr Michael Laudrup qui y a joué quand il avait 18 ans, Platini, Torricelli, Peruzzi dans le but,… et puis Buffon est venu au club et il a commencé à être mon idole après Peter Schmeichel bien sûr.
Quand on a tiré au sort la Juventus dans le groupe, j’étais plus qu’heureux, c’était un sentiment fantastique de savoir que j’allais jouer contre Buffon et mon équipe préférée. Mais après la Ligue des champions, je voulais essayer autre chose, je me sentais prêt j’avais presque 28 ans, un bon âge pour essayer pour voir si je pouvais sortir après la Ligue des champions où j’ai joué un tournoi fantastique malgré 22 buts encaissés en 6 matchs. J’ai jouais peut-être mon meilleur match de ma vie contre la Juventus et Buffon à Copenhague, donc tout est parfaitement tombé. Après pour le championnat, nous avons remporté la meilleur d’argent et ensuite j’ai pensé que je voulais essayer à un niveau supérieur.
Passage en France :
Vous avez passé 3 saisons en France à Evian TG puis Bastia, que retenez-vous de ces deux expériences en France, vos seules de votre carrière pour l’instant ?
J’ai eu l’opportunité d’aller à Evian Thonon Gaillard. Ce sentiment pour la première fois d’aller dans un autre pays et un meilleur championnat, c’était fantastique pour moi, surtout en tant que gardien de but, cela peut être très difficile de partir en venant du Danemark. C’était une bonne expérience à essayer, j’avais de bons amis comme Daniel Wass qui jouait déjà à Evian et ils avaient déjà 3-4 joueurs danois la saison précédente donc ils en savaient beaucoup sur nous, joueurs danois. Je parlais beaucoup avec Daniel et il m’a dit que c’était un bon club où aller, qu’ils voulaient rester en L1, bien sûr se développer et essayer de voir s’ils pouvaient être plus haut en championnat et devenir une équipe qui joue régulièrement en L1.
C’était difficile au début, apprendre une nouvelle langue, essayer différents styles de formation, … Car à Nordsjaelland je travaillais dans un sens et maintenant en France c’était complètement différent. Donc j’ai appris beaucoup à m’entraîner différemment chaque semaine, de nouveaux exercices avec l’entraîneur des gardiens et bien sûr ne pas comprendre au début c’était dur. Mais j’ai trouvé une bonne relation avec Daniel nous sommes devenus de très bons amis et nous continuons à nous parler aussi aujourd’hui et bien sûr nous jouons ensemble en équipe nationale, alors il m’a beaucoup aidé au début.
J’ai commencé sur le banc parce que Bertand Laquait était le numéro 1, expérimentée et très bon, mais j’ai eu la chance après qu’il ai eu quelques problèmes, il s’est blessé et ensuite j’ai commencé à jouer. Cela a été des expériences fantastiques avec des matchs difficiles contre de bonnes équipes je me souviens des victoires contre Monaco et le PSG à domicile, un match nul contre Monaco à l’extérieur. La première saison était une lutte autour de la zone de relégation, donc nous devions nous maintenir. Le match dont je me souviens est bien sûr le dernier contre Sochaux à l’extérieur. Si Sochaux pouvait gagner le match, nous descendions et si nous battions Sochaux nous restions. Donc, nous avons eu beaucoup de pression avant ce match, et nous avons gagné 3-0 et mon ami Daniel a marqué deux buts et c’était comme si nous avions remporté un trophée parce que nous nous sommes maintenus. Donc, la première saison, j’ai joué plus de 20 matchs pour aider l’équipe à rester L1. C’était une première expérience fantastique la première année en France.
Et la deuxième saison est devenue un peu plus difficile pour nous, j’ai commencé à jouer, et les résultats n’étaient pas bon, puis l’entraîneur a décidé de me changer. Bien sûr, il y a eu de bons moments mais aussi des moments difficiles où j’étais sur le banc la dernière partie de la deuxième saison et nous n’avons pas pu nous maintenir, donc Evian, malheureusement, nous étions descendus. Je n’ai pas eu la seconde chance de revenir sur le terrain et de prouver que je pouvais être celui qui aiderait l’équipe. Donc, nous avons été malheureusement relégués en Ligue 2 et puis j’ai pensé que ce n’était peut-être pas si intéressant, si je voulais toujours être en équipe nationale, je devais jouer.
Et puis j’ai vu l’opportunité d’aller en Corse au FC Bastia pour rester en Ligue 1 et me battre pour une place là-bas avec Jean Louis Leca. Il a été le gardien réserviste la plus grande partie de sa carrière, alors j’ai pensé que c’était une chance de prendre la place et il a également été blessé. Donc, j’ai commencé à jouer tout de suite, mon premier match contre Guingamp nous avons gagné 3-0 à domicile, c’était une sensation parfaite après ce match devant le public, de bonnes statistiques, un clean sheet, tout était bon. Et puis nous avons eu deux matches difficiles à l’extérieur contre Saint-Etienne et Marseille. On a perdu contre Saint-Etienne 2-1, on a eu un carton rouge en début de match, et ils avaient un but de peut-être 25 mètres, que peut-être que j’aurais dû arrêter, je pense que l’entraîneur qu’il voulait que je l’arrête. Et puis contre Marseille on a perdu 4-0 et j’avais peut-être un but que j’aurais dû sauver également, et l’entraîneur n’a peut-être pas été impressionné.
J’ai joué les 3 premiers matchs puis Jean Louis Leca était de retour de blessure et l’entraîneur a décidé de lui donner la chance et je devais me battre pour revenir dans l’équipe. Bien sûr, je l’ai accepté pour lui donner une chance et puis j’ai pensé que je devais travailler dur pour rester dans le but. Malheureusement pour moi, Leca a joué une saison fantastique et je pouvais voir du banc qu’il était très décisif, de bons arrêts et il a sauvé des points pour Bastia et il a été une grand acteur de notre 10e position en championnat. Je n’ai pas joué plus de 6 matchs avec la Coupe, ce n’était pas ce que j’espérais, mais quand j’y repense, c’était une période difficile mais c’était une expérience fantastique de 3 ans en France, cela m’a donné un beaucoup à emporter avec moi dans ma carrière. Je devais jouer après le contrat d’un an à Bastia, alors j’ai décidé de ne pas prolonger, je voulais jouer pour retourner en équipe nationale donc c’était la meilleure chose que je pouvais faire, revenir au Danemark.
Le Danemark est décrit pour être l’un des meilleurs pays pour vivre et au niveau éducatif, qu’avez-vous pensez de la France ? La Savoie et la Corse sont deux beaux endroits pour vivre non ?
Des hauts et des bas en France mais un souvenir fantastique pour moi et j’ai fondé ma famille avec mon premier enfant, nous avons eu notre premier fils à Thonon. Du coup, on y regarde en arrière avec un très grand plaisir et ça nous manque beaucoup la vie en France. On en a beaucoup parlé si on devait repartir à l’étranger pour y jouer à nouveau. Mais maintenant j’ai 35 ans alors bien sûr mon âge est aussi une chose et bien sûr mes deux fils grandissent, l’école est commencée maintenant et bien sûr il faut garder cela à l’esprit lors de la planification de notre carrière. J’ai donc décidé de renouveler mon contrat en ce moment ici dans mon club.
Mais j’y repense avec grand plaisir et si je pouvais réessayer, j’adorerais y retourner. Vous ne savez jamais, je ne suis pas encore cramé. Il y a peut-être une possibilité parfois dans le futur. Je viens de parler à Nikolai Larsen avant qu’il ne vienne en France à Guingamp, et je lui souhaite bonne chance et j’espère qu’il pourra jouer beaucoup et qu’ils pourront remonter de la Ligue 2, mais c’est une ligue difficile pour remonter. J’espère pour lui que ce sera un bon choix et qu’un autre gardien de Nordsjaelland vienne en France, c’est vraiment sympa.
Nous vivions à Neuvecelle à seulement 10 minutes d’Evian, et c’était agréable et calme, pas la plus grande ville. C’était un endroit magnifique avec de belles vues, des montagnes. La vie en France était incroyable. Ça me manque vraiment d’avoir un bon entraînement, d’aller à la boulangerie chercher du pain et de rentrer à la maison prendre un bon repas et nous pouvions sortir et dîner au restaurant. C’était incroyable de découvrir la façon de vivre en France. Et les gens là-bas étaient vraiment gentils. Ma vue me manque vraiment, j’avais une vue fantastique.
Et bien sûr, la Corse est l’endroit où nous, les Danois, allons souvent en vacances. Belle plage et très belle vieille ville de Bastia. Vous pouviez aller à Ajaccio pour visiter beaucoup de beaux endroits dans le sud de l’île comme Saint-Florent. C’était comme un endroit où vous passiez des vacances en été, donc c’était incroyable d’essayer de vivre dans un endroit comme celui-là. J’ai vraiment hâte de revenir dans les environs d’Evian, j’espère que bientôt je pourrais descendre sans le Corona virus et bien sûr un jour, je retournerai à Bastia et en Corse et je visiterai la belle île.
Retour au Danemark :
Depuis votre retour au Danemark, en 4 saisons vous avez connu que des belles saisons en terminant 3e avec Lyngby et en étant double champion avec Midtjylland et vainqueur d’une Coupe, remporté de nombreuses distinctions et vous avez même dépassé les 100 clean-sheets en Superliga, quel sont vos sentiments là-dessus ?
J’ai signé pour Lyngby qui a été promu en Superliga, et ce fut une décision difficile car c’était une nouvelle équipe dans l’élite et avant de signer vous ne savez pas ce qui va se passer. Mais j’avais juste besoin d’un nouveau départ, alors j’ai vu cela comme une bonne occasion de revenir et de montrer qui j’étais. Et la saison à Lyngby a été fantastique, tout le monde dans l’équipe jouait au plus haut niveau et nous battions toutes les équipes u championnat. Et nous étions bien sûr des outsiders lorsque nous jouons contre Bröndby, le FC Copenhague et le FC Midtjylland, mais nous surprenions tout le monde. Nous sommes devenus troisièmes de Supeliga, remportant la médaille de bronze.
Ce fut une saison incroyable pour Lyngby qui a connu des hauts et des bas dans les ligues danoises et vraiment un beau souvenir et une saison historique pour le club. Ça a relancé ma carrière après une période en France où je n’ai pas joué. Je suis revenu dans l’équipe nationale à cause de blessures et de gardiens ne jouaient pas. C’était donc fantastique de revenir et de recommencer à jouer. Et nous avions un esprit fantastique dans l’équipe qui nous a beaucoup aidé et qui tout le monde était concerné en courrant, se battant, taclant. Et nous avions un bon entraîneur qui pouvait vraiment nous motiver à performer dans les grands matchs. Lors du dernier match, nous avons battu Midtjylland mon équipe actuelle 3-0 à l’extérieur, et nous leur avons pris la troisième place.
Ensuite, j’ai eu l’opportunité d’aller dans une plus grande équipe, à Midtjylland la saison suivante. Ils m’ont acheté et j’ai vu l’opportunité de me battre à nouveau pour le trophée. Et oui, nous avons remporté le trophée la saison suivante, c’était une saison incroyable où nous avons remporté le trophée face à Bröndby. Nous changions de place de numéro un et de numéro deux avec eux toute la saison et à la fin nous étions sur le point de perdre le titre, puis la dernière semaine de la saison, nous avons obtenu l’aide d’une autre équipe qui a marqué à la dernière minute contre eux. Et nous avons gagné contre le FC Copenhague et Bröndby et ensuite nous avons pu voir le trophée à domicile lors du dernier match. Donc, une saison incroyable mais surtout les dernières semaines. Après cette saison, j’ai pensé que c’était le bon choix de revenir en arrière et d’être en tête de la ligue et de montrer un bon niveau de gardien de but.
La saison d’après, nous étions deuxièmes, le FC Copenhague a remporté le trophée, mais nous avons été en finale de la Coupe. Et comme vous l’avez dit plus tôt, je leur ai pris 2 Coupes, et ils ont perdu 4 finales dans l’histoire du club. C’était donc la cinquième fois qu’ils étaient en finale. Et la semaine précédente, j’ai perdu mon frère dans un accident de voiture, bien sûr une semaine très difficile pour moi. Mais après cet accident, toute l’équipe était avec moi et me soutenait. Je n’ai bien sûr pas joué le jour où cela s’est produit, nous avions un match contre le FC Copenhague, mais après avoir dit au revoir à mon frère j’étais déterminé à revenir rapidement, après avoir obtenu le soutien principalement de ma famille et de mes coéquipiers pendant la semaine. J’étais juste déterminé à jouer la finale pour mon petit frère.
La finale a été incroyable, je ne peux pas la décrire, tout le monde me soutenait également les fans de Bröndby nos adversaires, et puis le match était incroyable. Nous avons été aux tirs au but et j’ai sauvé 2 penaltys décisifs pour remporter les trophées pour Midtjylland pour la première fois. C’était comme s’il m’aidait à être décisif en finale, et ce trophée final est pour lui. Donc, cela a été une saison incroyable après ce qui s’est passé, et j’ai beaucoup appris sur moi-même, la mentalité et la force mentale que vous pouvez avoir en tant qu’athlète et aussi en tant que personne si vous perdez quelqu’un que vous aimez. J’ai beaucoup appris de ça et je me suis endurci avec moi-même et je l’aurai toujours avec moi quand je m’entraîne, je joue des matchs. Si on y réfléchit et aussi dans votre vie privée quand vous avez quelque chose de négatif, vous pouvez vraiment apprendre de cette situation où vous perdez quelqu’un. Donc, j’ai beaucoup appris en tant qu’être humain et beaucoup sur moi-même au cours de cette saison.
Et puis cette saison a été très bonne, nous continuons simplement à jouer avec quelques informations légèrement modifiées et de nouveaux joueurs. Nous avons juste continuer à gagner, et nous avons remporté le championnat avec +14 points au FC Copenhague en les battant 3 fois. Donc, nous avons été très forts cette saison et avons repris le trophée. Maintenant, nous avons juste besoin d’un bon parcours en Europe, donc nous espérons que cette année Midtjylland pourra aller en phase de groupes, espérons-le en Ligue des champions, mais nous devons aller à l’une des phases de groupes. C’est donc ce sur quoi nous travaillons actuellement. Alors oui, les 4 saisons passées ici au Danemark ont été incroyables après une dernière période en Corse et aussi la dernière période à Evian difficiles.
Pour les 100 clean sheets, c’était une statistique que je recherchais quand j’ai commencé à Lyngby. J’avais beaucoup de clean sheets là-bas, et je regardais les statistiques. Et puis je me dis que ça pourrait être amusant d’avoir cent clean sheets. Donc, les trois dernières saisons, j’ai eu de nombreux clean sheets avec l’aide de mes coéquipiers donc c’était une étape importante pour moi de monter dans ce club fermé de cette statistiques, que seuls 3 gardiens de but de la ligue danoise ont pu réaliser. Donc, j’espère pouvoir atteindre les 126 qui est le record, mais ensuite je dois jouer quelques saisons dans le futur pour le faire.
Le FC Midtjylland a la particularité d’utiliser un modèle basé sur l’utilisation des datas et la prise en compte de la personnalité du joueur, y-êtes-vous réceptif et qu’est-ce que cela vous apporte concrètement en tant que gardien ?
Ouais, le club a un propriétaire en Angleterre, Matthew Benham, qui a une autre société avec beaucoup de données et ils l’ont beaucoup utilisé dans les matchs pour savoir quelles sont les plus grandes chances, les expected goals, … alors ils l’ont utilisé comme une image de notre jeu. Et puis ils l’ont également utilisé dans le système de scouting quand ils ont repéré des joueurs. Donc je suis sûr qu’ils recherchent de nouveaux joueurs s’ils veulent vendre des joueurs actuels. Ils peuvent tout chercher, et ils l’utilisent comme recherche avant de signer de nouveaux joueurs.
Je pense que c’est un bon outil à utiliser également avec la vidéo avec Wyscout, mais ils ont aussi beaucoup de données supplémentaires pour vraiment passer par un joueur, savoir exactement quel joueur ils recherchent, ils peuvent indiquer les données des carrières des joueurs et statistiques. Ils peuvent trouver des talents spéciaux pour pouvoir les développer et pour les revendre à l’avenir. Ils l’ont fait aussi avec moi parce que ma saison à Lyngby était vraiment bonne, donc je pense qu’ils ont regardé aussi les données de ma saison là-bas.
Ils utilisent également l’analyse de notre comportement, pour savoir quel type de personne nous sommes avec des couleurs différentes. Le rouge est pour les joueurs orientés vers la victoire. Le jaune est pour les créatifs, qui aiment les nouvelles idées qui essaient de nouvelles choses. Moi-même je suis plus bleu et vert, à l’aise avec mon entraînement actuel et pareil je travaille dans de petites boîtes, sans beaucoup de nouveautés. Et le vert ressemble plus à une personne axé famille, qui aime conduire avec une voiture familiale en toute sécurité et savoir que tout le monde va bien. Chaque joueur a une couleur, donc tout le monde sait comprendre le comportement de l’autre.
En tant que coéquipier, je sais qu’un joueur fait peut-être cela dans certaines situations, et qu’il voulait que cela soit comme ça et un autre joueur voulait comme ça. Nous en savons un peu plus les uns sur les autres sur le comportement et comment nous agissons dans certaines situations. Je ne sais pas si tout le monde l’utilise au quotidien à l’entrainement, mais surtout moi en tant que joueur plus âgé et en tant que leader ou je devrais être un leader dans l’équipe, je sais que peut-être que les jeunes sont plus créatifs et que quelqu’un d’autre est plus comme ça. Tous les joueurs peuvent l’utiliser pour avoir cela à l’esprit et savoir ensuite réagir et parler aux gens, et quand ils vont recevoir des critiques, vous savez comment parler au jeune joueur, au joueur vedette ou un autre. Surtout pour l’entraîneur, il sait aussi quel genre de personne il doit intégrer dans l’équipe. Si vous le voyez du point de vue de l’organisation, c’est un très bon outil pour mettre dans une équipe pour avoir toutes les sortes couleurs et pas seulement l’esprit gagnant avec la couleur rouge.
Comment se passe votre préparation pour la nouvelle saison qui se profile et qu’est ce que cela vous fait de revenir en France à l’occasion du match amical face à Reims ce samedi ?
Oui, nous avons déjà commencé il y a une semaine. Donc, nous nous entraînons par temps chaud. Aujourd’hui (ndlr : mercredi), nous avons un jour de congé pour moi, donc je l’ai vraiment apprécié, je suis un peu fatigué mais comme vous le savez nous devons être en forme rapidement pour pouvoir jouer en Europe le 25 août déjà. Nous devons nous entraîner et être prêts bientôt. Il fait chaud car le temps est beau, ici au Danemark il y a aussi 40° et une vague de chaleur la semaine prochaine également. Donc, tout le monde se plaint mais nous devons aussi en profiter.
Oui, on y va vendredi après l’entraînement et puis on joue samedi à 18H au stade Auguste-Delaune donc j’ai vraiment hâte de jouer à nouveau contre une équipe française et de voir le niveau et comparer le niveau avec nous. J’ai vu qu’ils avaient fait une bonne saison l’an dernier et nous avons aussi fait une bonne saison parce que nous avons remporté le championnat. Et j’ai vu qu’ils étaient aussi de très bons pour défendre le but, pour ne pas avoir encaissé autant de buts la saison dernière en Ligue 1.
En sélection danoise, vous avez toujours été numéro 2 ou 3 dans la hiérarchie, quel est votre rôle au sein du groupe ?
J’ai fait partie de l’équipe nationale en tant que gardien réservisite et chaque fois que j’ai été appelé, c’est un grand honneur pour moi. C’est fantastique d’être ici, de jouer avec les meilleurs joueurs du Danemark et les meilleurs joueurs des meilleures ligues. J’y suis maintenant depuis 7 ou 8 ans, alors j’ai commencé à vraiment sentir que je fais partie du groupe. Depuis que je suis sélectionné, j’ai vu beaucoup de matchs du banc. Mais c’est toujours agréable de faire partie de l’équipe et c’est un grand honneur. J’espère vraiment pouvoir continuer à faire partie de l’équipe, c’est ce pour quoi je travaille chaque jour, c’est ce que j’espère pouvoir impressionner les nouveaux sélectionneurs et bien sûr, c’est toujours mon objectif d’impressionner avec beaucoup de matchs.
Mes anciens entraîneurs sont maintenant sélectionnés comme les nouveaux sélectionneurs de l’équipe nationale, et je les connais très bien. Donc, j’espère vraiment pouvoir continuer à rester dans l’équipe, j’y étais les 6 derniers mois de 2019 pour qualifier le Danemark pour l’Euro. Et bien sûr, cet été aurait dû être un été fantastique à Copenhague avec l’Euro et 3 matchs à domicile au Parken. Tout le monde est vraiment triste de la situation que nous avons dans le monde et non pas juste pour l’annulation de l’Euro qui a été reporté à l’année prochaine. C’est vraiment un objectif principal pour moi de réaliser une très bonne saison la saison prochaine ici qui débute bientôt et d’être dans l’effectif pour l’Euro à Copenhague l’année prochaine.
Ce sera pour moi un plus grand accomplissement que la Ligue des champions si je pouvais être de l’Euro à domicile. Je sens que je fais partie du groupe, j’établis de bonnes relations avec les gars, tu ressens juste ton rôle important dans le groupe même si tu ne joues pas. Nous avons Kasper Schmeichel qui est notre numéro un, qui joue à un niveau élevé en Premier League, et nous le soutenons autant que nous le pouvons et essayons de le pousser aussi haut que possible. C’est un grand joueur et un bon ami. Et j’espère qu’un jour la chance viendra de jouer un match pour l’équipe nationale, c’est aussi un objectif principal pour moi s’il y a une possibilité de jouer. Il y a encore du temps pour ça, peut-être que ça viendra, mais l’objectif principal est d’être l’un des trois gardiens de l’effectif.
Enfin, avez-vous des projets pour la suite à l’heure actuelle ? Comptez-vous continuer votre carrière de joueur encore longtemps à l’image d’un Buffon qui continue encore à 42 ans et que vous avez pu affronter, ou dans le coaching où vous avez déjà passé des diplômes d’entraineur ?
Après mon retour de France, j’ai commencé l’école en débutant une formation, j’ai fait l’année suivante une formation en leadership à côté de ma carrière de footballeur. C’est plus en ligne mais je vais une fois par mois rendre visite à mon professeur et j’ai un examen chaque année. Je termine la première partie du module de leadership, ce sera une étape importante pour moi. Comme je l’ai déjà dit, j’ai arrêté l’école pour commencer ma carrière de footballeur à 100% et me concentrer uniquement sur le football. Je n’ai rien à quoi me relier, donc je dois commencer à un âge avancé pour quelque chose que j’aime et que je peux utiliser. Pour moi, c’est un bon outil, j’utilise l’éducation au leadership pour être un meilleur joueur de football sur le terrain, pour être l’un des anciens leaders quand nous avons un conflit, quand je dois prendre des responsabilités, …
Je veux commencer la licence d’entraînement de gardien de but après ma carrière, mais je ne sais pas quand cela sera le cas. J’espère pouvoir jouer et performant à 42 ans, car c’est mon idole et j’adore qu’il continue à jouer à son niveau, c’est une grande inspiration pour moi. J’espère pouvoir faire la même chose, que mon corps aura la même forme que maintenant, ainsi je pourrai continuer et peut-être ne pas jouer mais toujours aimer jouer et faire partie d’une équipe. J’espère que nous pourrons parler dans 5 ans et voir comment je suis et voir où je suis. Mais mon plan est d’être entraîneur de gardiens de but et d’utiliser mon expérience pour entraîner de jeunes joueurs, de jeunes gardiens de but. Vous ne savez jamais si vous avez la chance d’être coach à temps plein. Cette formation au leadership que je peux utiliser peut aussi être en dehors du football.
C’est un excellent conseil pour les jeunes joueurs qui font la même chose que moi, surtout en jouant au Danemark, vous devez vous concentrer sur d’autres choses. Si vous pouvez étudier, à côté de votre football si vous avez le temps, je serai le premier à leur donner ce conseil. Beaucoup de joueurs mettent fin à leur carrière, cela peut être une blessure demain. Que faire, vous aimez jouer au football et quelle sera la prochaine étape si vous n’avez aucune idée de ce que vous aimez. J’ai trouvé mon chemin dans autre chose, je peux aussi utiliser mon esprit sur quelque chose d’autre pour ne pas jouer à la PlayStation tous les jours et bien sûr les enfants prennent beaucoup de temps, mais j’ai trouvé une passion pour cette éducation et je peux l’utiliser pour ma carrière et aussi l’utiliser après. Donc, c’est parfait pour moi maintenant et je sais dans quelle direction aller et voyons si je peux obtenir cette licence et j’espère que je pourrai être un bon coach un jour.

On the occasion of the friendly match between Stade de Reims and FC Midtjylland this Saturday, we were able to talk to one of the best goalkeepers in the Danish league and in its history, Jesper Hansen. Indeed, the 35-year-old Danish goalkeeper will return to France on the occasion of this match, and through an hour-long interview we were able to come back with him in detail on his career.
The opportunity to learn more about the development of the FC Nordsjaelland club where he was trained, on his time in France at Evian Thonon Gaillard and Bastia, and on his successful return to Denmark where he is doing fine days of FC Midtjylland currently.
Formation and FC Nordsjaelland :
You were trained at FC Nordjsaelland, how was your training there and were you always destined for the post of goalkeeper ?
Yeah from the beginning I started when I was 4 years old, and I didn’t play outside on the pitch. Of course, I started to play when I was small but just to play like that with the ball. But not so many years after, the coach just asked who wanted to be the goalkeeper and I was one of those who just raise my hand and I was sure that I was a goalkeeper after that. I stay in the goal and I didn’t play outside on the pitch since day one, I haven’t tried to be attacker, midfielder or defender. I have always been there in thirty years inside the goal. It was my destiny to become a goalkeeper. A lot of colleagues have tried to be outfield player before, and then at some point try to be a goalkeeper and maybe they were better to be goalkeeper.
In 2000, I came to Nordsjaelland from my childhood club Ølstykke. I was under fifteen, so I started on the youth teams. Two years after I got my first professional contract at 17 just right before my 18. So, I quit the school and I was at 100% on my dream to become a professional footballer. And now that’s more than 20 years ago almost, I can tell it was a good decision. A lot of good memories, in Nordsjaelland it was 13 years before I want to France, so it was a fantastic place to be. It was where I got educated, I was raised as a goalkeeper.
Nordsjaelland is today known to be one of the best training clubs in Denmark and Europe, was that already the case in your time when you were training ?
The club was just starting to develop to what it is today, with young players, really a lot of young players now. But when I was there, they really started to build up that strategy to play nice football down on the ground, to play like compared to FC Barcelona. We had some coaches who really looked up the style of play of Barcelona. So, I remember at some points sometimes we were compared to FCB, because we play out from the goalkeeper and with not a long of long balls. We were a very possession team and started during my period at the club developing the strategy which you can see when you look at the FC Nordsjaelland style of playing now. I’m really proud when I look back on the 13 years.
Nordjsaelland has a big big place in my heart it was where I came through as a goalkeeper and I got my chance in that club. So if they don’t know it, but I’m sure they know it, I really loved the club and I still love the style of playing football. that’s my DNA and my values as a goalkeeper style. And then of course I try something else since, but I still have as a ground foundation in me as a goalkeeper and is a big way of my goalkeeping style, the 13 years I was grow up in the club.
In Nordsjaelland, you won the Cup 2 times against Midtjylland and then became champion and thanks to that you were able to compete in the Champions League groups, how were your 6 seasons there ?
It was very tough in the beginning when I started playing, because Nordsjaelland was fighting just about the relegation zone sometimes we were very in trouble looking downward to the teams and we were just clear of relegation. And then, at that point, they change coach to Morten Wieghorst who is now the assistant coach of Denmark and Kasper Hjulmand who is the head coach of Denmark, here he was the assistant coach. So now they have switched on the national team. But he gives me the chance and the first two seasons were very thought but I learn a lot. Before that I was on loan when I was 20 to my childhood team who was playing in 1. division (D2), and it give me very good development and some experiences to come back and fight for my spot in the first team in Superliga.
Then, in 2010, we went all the way to the final in the Cup and we were playing Midtjylland and we had the chance the first trophy as a small club of Denmark. And we did it and after that it has gives us the sense of we could win something. We had some good players in the team, we were starting to play very well. It was a kick-off to the next year where we want to the final again, and against Midtjylland again my club now, so it was like the beginning of something very exciting for the club and it develop the style the all club as an organisation to what it is today and it change the mindset like we can be a top team in Denmark. And we had those two Cup finals in row against Midtjylland and after the second one, that’s not so often we see a team win the cup title two years in row.
It was a fantastic feeling, and yeah it started to give us the opportunity to change the mindset not to be in the relegation zone but to come out and try to qualify for the UEFA Cup we play against some exciting teams and we lost two years in a row against Sporting CP and we were very close to beat them. The year after the 2 cups finals, we won the championship and the winner are going directly in the Champions League group stages. So, it was a fantastic bonus and unique opportunity to play the Champions League. That’s year we have to win it, we came back from the second place to beat FC Copenhagen in the last two rounds of the championship.
So it was a crazy season, we were behind seven/eight points and we won a lot of points in the last part of the season and became champions. It was a unique feeling to win the trophy for the first time and of course knowing that we will directly going to the Champions League group stage and could meet some big teams. And we did, we got a very very strong group. Against Juventus, it has always been my favourite team. I remember the shirt first able I love the colour and I remember players like Ravanelli, Vieri, Del Piero, Zidane, and of course Michael Laudrup play there when he was 18 years old, Platini, Torricelli, Peruzzi in the goal, … and then Buffon came to the club and he started to be my idol after Peter Schmeichel of course.
When we draw Juventus in the group, I was more than happy, it was a fantastic feeling to know I was going to play Buffon and my favourite team. After the Champions League, I wanted to try something else, I felt ready I was almost 28, a good age to try it to see if I could go out after the Champions League where I’ve actually played a fantastic tournament despite conceding 22 goals in 6 games. I was playing maybe my best game in my life against Juventus and Buffon in Copenhagen, so everything just fell perfectly. After for the championship, we won the silver medals and then I thought I want to try to a higher level.
Passage in France :
You spent 3 seasons in France at Evian TG then Bastia, and what do you remember from these two experiences in France, your only ones in your career so far ?
I got the opportunity to go to Evian Thonon Gaillard. That feeling for the first time to go to another country and a better liga, it was fantastic for me especially as a goalkeeper it can be very difficult to go and brought from Denmark. It was a good experience to try, I had some good friends like Daniel Wass who was already playing in Evian and they already had 3-4 danish players the season before so they knew a lot about us danish players. I talk a lot with Daniel and he said it was a good club to go to, they wanted to stay in L1, of course develop and try to see if they could go up in the league and become a team who regularly play in L1.
It was tough in the beginning, to learn a new language, to try different style of training because in Nordsjaelland I have been working one way and now in France it was completely different. So I learn a lot to train differently every week, new exercises with the goalkeeping coach and of course not understanding in the beginning. It was hard but I found a good relationship with Daniel we come very good friends talk with each other’s also today and of course we play in the national teams together, so he helped me a lot at the beginning.
I started on the bench because Bertand Laquait he was the first team goalkeeper, experienced and very good, but I got the chance after he got some problems he got injured and then I started to play. He was fantastic experiences with some tough games against good teams like wins against Monaco and PSG at home, a draw against Monaco away I remember. Of course, the first season was just about the relegation zone, so we had to keep us alive. The game I remember is of course the last one against Sochaux away. If Sochaux could win the game, we will go down and if we were beating Sochaux we stay up. So, we had a lot of pressure before that game, and we won 3-0 and my friend Daniel has scored two goals and it was like we won a trophy because we saved our life. So, the first season, I played more than 20 games to help the team to stay up it was a fantastic first experience the first year in France.
And the second season became a little bit more difficult for us, I started to play, and the result was not good and then the coach decided to change me. Of course, he had some good times but also some tough times where I was on the banc the last part of the second season and we didn’t survive so Evian unfortunately we were down. I didn’t get the second chance to come in and prove that I could be the one who help the team. So, we were unfortunately relegated to Ligue 2 and then I thought it’s may not be so interested, if I still want to be in the national team I need to play.
And then I saw the opportunity to go to Corsica in FC Bastia to stay in Ligue 1 and fight for a spot there with Jean Louis Leca. He has been reserve keeper the most of his career, so I thought it was a chance to take the place and he was also injured. So, I started to play straight away, my first game against Guingamp we won 3-0 at home, it was a perfect feeling after that game in front of the home crowd, good stats, clean sheet, everything was good. And then we had two tough games away against Saint-Etienne and Marseille. We lost against Saint-Etienne 2-1, we got a red card at the beginning of the game, and they had a goal from may be 25 yards out, maybe I should have saved it, I think the coach he wanted me to saved it. And then against Marseille we lost 4-0 and I had may be a goal I should have saved, and the coach was not may be impressed.
I played the first 3 games and then Jean Louis Leca was back of injury and the coach decided to give him the chance and I have to fight my way back to the team. Of course, I accepted it to give him the chance and then I thought I have to work hard to stay in the goal. Unfortunately for me, Leca he played a fantastic season and I could see from the bench that he was very decisive, good saves and he saved points for Bastia and he was big part of our 10th position on the league. I didn’t’ play more than 6 games with the Cup, it was not what I hope for, but still when I look back at it, it was a tough time but he was a fantastic experience of 3 years in France it gave me a lot to take with me in my career. I had to play after the one year contract in Bastia, so I decided not to extend, I wanted to play to go to the national team again so it was the best thing I could do, to come back to Denmark.
Denmark is described as one of the best countries to live in and also in terms of education, what do you think of living in France ? Savoy and Corsica are two beautiful places to live, aren’t they ?
Ups and downs in France but fantastic lifetime memory for me and I started my family with my first child we got your first son in Thonon. So, we look back at it with very big pleasure and we miss it a lot the life in France. We have been talking about it a lot if we should go away again abroad to play again but now I’m 35 so of course my age is also one thing and of course my two sons are getting older, school is started now and of course you have to take that in mind when you planning our career so I decided to renew my contract at the moment here in my club.
But I look back at it with great pleasure and if I could try again, I would love to go again. You never know, I’m not down yet. Maybe there is a possibility sometimes in the future. I just spoke to Nikolai Larsen before he want out to France in Guingamp, and I which him good luck and hope that he can play a lot and they can get go up again from Ligue 2 but it’s a though league to promote. I hope for him it will be a good choice and another goalkeeper from Nordsjaelland going to France so it’s nice.
We were lived in Neuvecelle just 10 minutes from Evian, and it was nice and quiet, not the biggest city. It was a beautiful place with good views, mountains. Life in France was amazing. I really miss to have a good training, go to the boulangerie get a bread and go home have a good meal and we could go out and have a dinner at a restaurant. It was amazing to experience the way of living in France. And the people there were really nice. I really miss my view I had a fantastic view.
And of course, Corsica is where we Danish people often go to vacation. Beautiful beach and very nice old city in Bastia. You could go to Ajaccio to visit a lot of beautiful places in the south of the island like Saint-Florent. It was like a place where you have you holiday in the summer, so it was amazing to try to live in a place like that. I really looking forward to coming back to the place around Evian, I hope soon I could go down without the corona virus and of course someday, I will go back to Bastia and Corsica and visit the beautiful island.
Return to Denmark :
Since your return to Denmark, in 4 seasons you have had only good seasons finishing 3rd with Lyngby and being double champion with Midtjylland and winner of a Cup, many distinctions and one hundred clean-sheets in Superliga, what are your feelings on that ?
I signed for Lyngby who was promoted to Superliga, and it was a tough decision because a new team in the elite and before you don’t know what will happen. But I just needed a new beginning, so I saw it as a good opportunity to come back and show who I was. And the season in Lyngby was fantastic, everybody on the team were performing on highest level and we were beating all the teams in the liga and we were of course underdogs when we play against Bröndby, FC Copenhagen and Midtjylland but we somehow surprise everybody. We became third in the league, winning the bronze medals.
It was an unbelievable season for Lyngby who has been up and downs in the leagues in Denmark and really a nice memory and historic season for the club. It kicks started my career again after period in France where I didn’t play. I came back on the national team because of injuries and goalkeepers were not playing. So, it was fantastic to come back and start playing again. And we had a fantastic spirit in the team who helped us a lot who everybody was really running, fighting, tackling and we had a good coach who could really motivated us to perform in the big games. In the last game, we beat Midtjylland my current team 3-0 away, and we were winning the third place from them.
Then, I got the opportunity to go to a bigger team Midtjylland the season after, they bought me, and I saw the opportunity to fight again for the trophy. And yeah, we won the trophy the season after, he was an amazing season where we won the trophy run with Bröndby. We were changing number one place and number two place with them all season and in the end we were just about to lose it to them, and then the last week of the season we got help from another team who scored in the last minute against them and we won against FC Copenhagen and Bröndby and then we could see the trophy at home in the last game. So, an unbelievable season but especially the last weeks. After that season, I thought it was the right choice to go back and be in the top of the league and show some good goalkeeping play.
The season after, we were second, FC Copenhagen won the trophy, but we were going to the final of the Cup. And like you said earlier, than I have been taking 2 Cup from them, so they have lost 4 finals in the club history. So, this was the fifth time they were to final. And the week before, I lost my brother in a car accident, of course a tough week, but after that accident all the team were with me and supporting me. I didn’t’ play of course the day it happen, we have a game against FC Copenhagen but after I say goodbye to my brother and I was determined to come back quick, get the support mainly from my family and my teammates during the week. I was just determined to play the final for my younger brother.
The final was amazing, I can’t describe it, everybody was supporting me also the Bröndby away fans, and then the game was incredible. Going to penalties and I saved 2 penalties decisive to win the trophies to Midtjylland for the first time. It was like he helps me to be decisive in the final, and that final trophy was for him. So, he was amazing season after what happen, and I learned a lot about myself, the mentality and the mental straightness you can have as athlete and also as a person if you lose someone you love. I learned a lot from that and I toughed with me and will always have it when I’m training, I’m playing games, were it is get thought and also in your private life when you have something negative, you can really learn from this heartbroken situation where you lose somebody. So, I learned a lot as a human being and a lot about myself in that season.
And then this season has been very strong, we just continue to play with some slightly changes information and new players. We just keep on wining, and we won the championship with +14 points to FC Copenhagen beating them 3 times. So, we have been very strong this season and taking the trophies back. Now we just need a good course in Europe, so we hope this year Midtjylland could go to group stage hopefully Champions League but we need to go to one of the group stage. So that’s what we are working on right now. So yes, the 4 seasons have been here in Denmark has been unbelievable after a though last period in Corsica and also the last period in Evian.
For the one hundred clean sheets, that was a statistic I was looking on when I started in Lyngby. I had a lot of clean sheet there, and I was watching the stats. And then I tell me in could be fun to have one hundred clean sheets. So, the last three seasons I have a bunch of clean sheet with help of my teammates so it was a milestone for me to go up in that club one hundred, that only 3 goalkeepers in the Danish league who has more than one hundred. So, I hope I can reach the 126 that is the best but then I need to play some seasons in the future.
FC Midtjylland has the particularity of using a model based on the use of data and the taking into account of the player’s personality, are you receptive to it and what does it bring you concretely as that keeper ?
Yeah the club has an owner in England, Matthew Benham, who has another company with a lot of data and they used it a lot in the games to know who the biggest chances, expected goals, … so they used it as a picture of our games. And then they also used it in the scouting system when they scout players, so I’m sure they are looking for new players if they going to sell some current players. They can search for everything, and they use it as a research before they sign new players.
I think it’s a good tool to use also with video with Wyscout, but they have also a lot of extra data to really go through a player, know exactly which player they are searching for, they can point out the data from the players careers and stats. They can may be find some special talents, they can develop to also in the future sell again. They did it also with me because my season in Lyngby was really good, so I think they also look the data from my season there.
They also use analyse of our behaviour, what can of person you are with different colours. Red is for players orientated winning. The yellow is for creative, that like new ideas, like new ideas, try new kind of new thing. Myself I more blue and green, comfortable with my practice the same and the same I work in small boxes, not so much new stuff all the time. And the green is more like a family person, who likes to drive with a family car with safety, and to know that everybody is ok. Every player as a colour, so everybody knows how to understand the way of behaviour.
As a teammate, I know that maybe a player is doing this in certain situation, and he wanted like this and another player wanted like that. We know a little bit a little more about each other on the behaviour and how we act in certain situation. I don’t know if everybody is using it in the daily training, but especially me as an older player and as a leader or should be a leader in the team I know that maybe the young guys are more creative and then somebody is more like that. All players can use it to have it in mind and then know to react and talk to people, and when they are going to get some criticism you know how to talk to the young player, to the star player or whatever. Especially for the coach he knows also what kind of types he has to put in on the team. If you see it from an organisation point of view, it’s a very good tool to put in a team to have all the colours and not only are only the wining spirit with red colour.
How is your preparation going for the new season that is looming and how does it feel to come back to France for the friendly match against Reims this Saturday?
Yes, we already started one week ago. So, we’re training in the hot weather. Today we have a day off for me, so I’m really enjoyed it, I’m a little bit tired but as you know we need to be in good shape quick so we can play in Europe the 25 of August already. We need to train and be ready soon. Yeah is hot because of the weather is nice, here in Denmark is also forty degrees and heat wave during the next week also. So, everybody is complaining but we need to enjoy as well.
Yes, we go Friday after practice and then we play Saturday at 6 at the stadium Auguste-Delaune so I really looking forward to play against a French team again and see the level compare the level with us. I saw they had a good season last year and we have a good season as well because we won the championship. And I saw there were also very good to defend the goal not conceding that many goals last season in the French league.
In Danish selection, you have always been number 2 or 3 in the hierarchy, what is your role within the group ?
I have been on the national team as a reserve keeper, and every time I got called up it’s a big honour for me. It’s fantastic to be here, to play with the best players in Denmark and best player away in the big leagues. I have been there now 7 or 8 years, so I’m started to really now feel I’m part of the group. As long as I have been selected a lot of time, I have seen a lot of matches from the banc but is always nice to be part of the squad and a big honour. I really hope I can continue to be part of the squad, that’s what I’m working for every day, that’s what I hope that I can impress the new coaches and of course that always be my goal to impress with a lot of games.
Now my former coaches are now selected as the new coaches for the national team, and I know them very well. So, I’m really hoping that I can continue staying in the squad, I was there the last 6 months of 2019 qualifying Denmark for the Euro. And of course, this summer should have been a fantastic summer in Copenhagen with the Euro and 3 home games in the Parken. Everybody is really sad about the situation we have in the world and not the cancellation of the Euro, but it was postponed to next year. That’s really a main goal for me to perform a very good season next season here starting soon and to be in the squad for the Euro in Copenhagen next year.
That’s will be for me a better accomplishment that the Champions League if I could go for the Euro at home. I feel I’m part of the group, I’m getting good relationship with the guys, you just feel your big part in the group even if you don’t play. We have Kasper Schmeichel who is our number one, is performing on a hight level in the Premier League, and we support him as much as we can and try to push him as high as we can. He is a big player and a good friend. And I hope that someday the chance will come to play a game for the national team, that’s also a main goal for me if there is a possibility to play. There still time for it, maybe it will come, but the main goal it’s to be one of the three goalkeepers in the squad.
Finally, do you have any plans for the future ? Do you plan to continue you’re playing career for a long time to come, like a Buffon who still continues at 42 and whom you have been able to face, or in coaching where you have already obtained coaching degrees ?
After I came back from France, I started school actually some education, I’m down next year an education in leadership next to my football career. It’s more online but I go once in a month to visit my teacher and I have an exam every year. I’m finishing the first part of the academy leadership, that will be a milestone for me. As I said before, I stop the school to start my football career at 100% and focus only on the football. I don’t have anything I can relay back, so I have to start in high age that I like and I can use. For me it’s a good tool, I use the leadership education to be a better football player on the pitch, to be one of the old leader when we have a conflict, when I have to take some responsibilities, …
I want to start the goalkeeper training licence after my career, but I don’t know when it is. I hope I can play and perform as 42, because is my idol and I love that he continues to play on his level it’s a great inspiration for me. I hope I can do the same, my body will be it the same shape as it is now so I can continue and may be not playing but still love to play and be a part of a squad. I hope we can talk in 5 years and see how I am and see where I am. But my plan is to be a goalkeeper trainer and use my experience to coach young players, young goalkeepers. You never know if you get the chance to be full time coach. This leadership education I can use as well may be also outside football.
It’s great advice for the young players who does the same as me, especially playing in Denmark you need to focus on other stuff. If you can study, beside your football if you have time for, I will be the first to give them this advice. A lot of players ending their career it can be an injury tomorrow whatever, what to do you love playing football and what will be the next step and you don’t have any clue about what you love. I have found my way in something else, I can also use my mind on something else not playing PlayStation every day and of course the kids are taking a lot of times, but I found a passion for this education and I can relay it in my career and also use it after. So, it’s perfect for me now and I know which way to go and let’s see if I can get this licence and I hope I can be a good coach one day.
