Comme vous aviez pu le voir dans les deux premiers épisodes, dans « Suivi de carrière » nous reviendrons sur les faits marquants de la saison d’Alfons Sampsted. En septembre dernier nous avions évoqué avec lui les matchs de qualification à la Coupe d’Europe et la sélection.
Ce troisième épisode de Suivi de carrière est consacré au bilan de sa saison 2021, son séjour à Paris en décembre, le parcours de Bodø/Glimt en Conference League, sa marque de vêtements…

Tu étais en vacances à Paris la semaine dernière et tu as assisté au match PSG – Breiðablik en Ligue des Champions féminine, c’était important pour toi d’être présent ?
Oui, Breiðablik est mon club formateur, celui où j’ai grandi, donc bien sûr je suis venu pour les supporter puisque la Ligue des Champions est un grand pas en avant pour elles.
As-tu rencontré des joueuses de Breiðablik avant ou après la rencontre ?
Oui j’en connais quelques unes d’entre elle depuis mon enfance et la gardienne est la meilleure amie de ma copine donc nous en avons rencontré certaines en centre ville et nous avons discuté, mais ça s’est fait par hasard.
Que tu retiens de ton voyage à Paris ?
C’était un beau voyage, avec beaucoup de choses à voir, comme la Tour Eiffel, les Catacombes… C’est une magnifique ville que je n’avais jamais visité auparavant donc c’était cool.
La semaine dernière vous étiez de nombreux islandais à être à Paris, comment expliques-tu cet amour pour la France ?
Je pense que c’était en grande partie dû au match. Beaucoup de personnes sont venues voir le match et en ont profité pour visiter la ville. Mais pour nous, c’était une coïncidence, nous n’avions pas prévu d’aller au match, mais c’était facile de venir en France et il y avait peu de restrictions. Il fallait simplement montrer le pass sanitaire et nous pouvions visiter la ville. Donc c’est une combinaison de beaucoup de choses.
Tant qu’on est en France, Patrick Berg vient de signer au RC Lens, en Ligue 1, est-ce que ça te donne envie toi aussi de jouer en France ?
Oui, ce serait amusant ! Nous devrions bien sûr trouver un club qui me convienne bien, comme c’est le cas pour Patrick je pense, Lens lui va très bien. Je ne vois pas beaucoup de match de Lens mais j’ai vu un match qu’ils ont gagné. Et j’ai le sentiment que ses points forts sont similaires à ceux des milieux de terrain lensois donc il sera un bon élément supplémentaire à leur équipe à mon avis.
Tu étais au stade avec Jón Dagur Þórsteinsson et Ísak Bergmann Jóhannesson, Jón Dagur était à Grenoble quelques jours avant, penses-tu qu’il pourrait jouer en France d’ici quelques mois ? Sachant que son contrat à Aarhus se termine en juin.
Je ne sais pas, ce serait sympa ! Je ne lui ai pas vraiment demandé mais si c’était la raison de son voyage, ce serait drôle. Je ne pense pas que ce soit le cas, il devait simplement être en vacances, mais s’il a un second agenda, c’est marrant ! [rires]
Tu sembles très apprécié par les jeunes joueurs comme les anciens, est-ce important pour toi ?
Oui bien sûr, mais il y a de nombreux gars qui sont des joueurs avec lesquels j’ai joué auparavant ou que je connais grâce au football donc beaucoup sont mes amis. Ca fait plaisir d’être apprécié, bien sûr !
Il semble y avoir une très grande solidarité entre les joueurs et joueuses islandais, es-tu d’accord avec ça ? Si oui, comment l’expliques-tu ?
Quand j’étais plus jeune, par exemple, Jón Dagur (Þórsteinsson) et moi étions à l’école ensemble et on était très proches. A chaque fois on sortait pour jouer au football. Il était souvent là donc je joue avec lui depuis que nous sommes enfants. Beaucoup d’entre eux sont simplement mes amis et c’est évidemment un plus de les avoir en tant que coéquipiers.
En Norvège, il y a beaucoup de joueurs islandais, que fais-tu quand tu les affrontes ? Tu leur parles avant le match, après le match, échanges ton maillot ?
Habituellement nous discutons seulement après le match et je connais la plupart d’entre eux donc c’est toujours sympa de pouvoir parler islandais pendant quelques minutes.
Tu as remporté avec Bodø/Glimt l’Eliteserien pour la deuxième saison consécutive, comment as-tu vécu cela ? Etait-ce différent par rapport à la saison dernière ?
C’était vraiment cool, cette saison était un peu différente. La saison dernière nous étions surtout une équipe offensive et nous étions capables de dominer des équipes au haut niveau. Cette année c’était un peu différent, nous dominions les matchs d’une autre manière, nous étions plus solides défensivement mais il y a eu du challenge. Perdre quelques joueurs et en avoir de nouveaux tout en conservant le même système. C’était une bonne expérience et j’étais heureux de pouvoir en faire partie.
Pour la deuxième saison consécutive, vous avez la meilleure défense du championnat, est-ce une satisfaction pour toi ou tu n’y as pas prêté attention ?
Oui quand tu es défenseur, c’est toujours quelque chose que tu regardes, les médias n’y font pas vraiment attention mais quand tu te regardes dans la glace et que tu sais que tu fais du bon travail, c’est agréable. Mais c’est le résultat d’un travail acharné et de nombreuses discussions dans la salle vidéo ! [rires] C’est toujours bien de voir de bonnes performances défensivement parlant.
Kjetil Knudsen a été prolongé jusqu’en 2024 alors qu’il était en fin de contrat en 2022, est-ce que ça te rassure pour la saison prochaine ou ça n’a pas d’importance pour toi ?
C’est génial pour le club et moi d’avoir l’entraîneur et le staff plus longtemps. Ça va nous aider à continuer de progresser. Continuer de progresser en tant qu’équipe et en tant que joueur ; lui et Morten Kalvenes (entraîneur adjoint) y sont pour beaucoup.
Peux-tu nous raconter comment tu as vécu le 6-1 contre l’AS Rome ? Avant le match, pendant le match et après.
Avant le match nous savions que c’était une bonne équipe, mais nous ne savions pas vraiment à quoi nous attendre. Donc nous voulions faire notre match, sans rien changer à ce que nous faisons d’habitude. Et nous avons commencer le match en gardant le ballon pendant deux minutes et en obtenant une demi chance de marquer. Et à ce moment-là, c’est la première fois où on s’est dit : « On peut leur faire mal, on peut leur faire mal ce soir » ! [rires] Et ensuite on a continué et à la fin on a marqué six buts et on en a concédé un ! Donc c’était une bonne journée de travail mais je dirais que c’est grâce au fait de jouer notre jeu plutôt que d’inventer quelque chose de défensif contre eux.
Comment avez-vous aborder ce match ? Comment vous êtes-vous préparés ? Et d’un point de vue personnel ?
Nous avons abordé ce match comme tous les autres. Nous savions que nous devions être à notre meilleur niveau parce qu’en un contre un, ces joueurs sont extrêmement bons. Donc c’était vraiment important que je sois à mon meilleur niveau quand j’allais affronter El Shaarawy. Je devais simplement jouer à mon meilleur niveau et jouer là où je suis bon !
Est-ce le meilleur match que tu as joué dans ta vie ?
L’un des matchs les plus amusants de ma carrière en tout cas. Que ce soit au match aller ou au retour, nous avons été très bons en tant qu’équipe, on a très bien travaillé ensemble et à titre personnel, c’était un bon match. Je pense que pour l’équipe c’était une performance incroyable.
Est-ce une déception d’avoir terminé deuxième au vu de votre parcours lors de cette phase de groupes ?
Hmm… Décevant peut-être pas. Oui tu peux toujours regarder en arrière et dire : « Qu’est-ce qu’il se serait passé si le but contre le CSKA Sofia avait été accepté, qu’est-ce qu’il se serait passé si on avait marqué là ou pas encaissé de but là ». Mais au final c’est six bonnes performances même si on aurait pu avoir un peu plus de chance. Maintenant nous nous sommes qualifiés et nous allons affronter le Celtic donc c’est un bon match à venir.
Tu as joué seize matchs d’affilée dans leur intégralité avec Bodø/Glimt, depuis le 26 septembre, comment fais-tu pour tenir ce rythme et rester à 100% malgré l’enchaînement des matchs ?
Oui c’est le fruit d’un travail acharné, on s’est très bien entraîné et on travaille beaucoup sur la récupération. Il s’agit donc principalement de ce que tu fais entre les matchs et de te concentrer sur ta forme. Bien sûr, il y a parfois des difficultés si tu rencontres un match compliqué et que ton corps est fatigué par la suite, mais un peu de repos et tu es prêt pour le prochain match.
Vous allez perdre des joueurs avant d’affronter le Celtic, vous sortirez d’une grosse coupure, avez-vous déjà évoqué cette double-confrontation ?
Euh… Non, pas vraiment, on a un peu parlé du match du Celtic car c’était le tirage au sort mais pas vraiment dans les détails. Tout le monde avait juste envie de se reposer un peu mais on en parlera quand on se verra en janvier.
Es-tu heureux de ce tirage ?
Oui, ça va être amusant, j’espère qu’il y aura beaucoup de supporters au stade !
Comment l’équipe va préparer ces deux matchs ?
Euh… Je ne suis pas sûr à 100% mais je suppose que nous allons à Marbella ou au Portugal ou quelque chose comme ça simplement pour nous éloigner du froid à Bodø en ce moment et j’espère jouer quelques matchs d’entraînement avant de partir. Ça va juste être tout à fait normal, juste s’entraîner beaucoup et ensuite retrouver la forme, donc ce ne sera pas des mesures drastiques. Faire ce que nous faisons parce que ça marche en ce moment.
Evoquons un peu la sélection, en septembre, le sélectionneur a aligné une équipe d’une moyenne d’âge de 28,6 ans contre une équipe de 25 ans de moyenne d’âge en novembre. Est-ce que l’ambiance a changée avec un si grand rajeunissement au sein de l’équipe?
Oui, c’est comme si on n’en parlait pas alors que le changement de fédération est en cours. Les jeunes arrivent, les anciens partent, cela prend du temps et ce n’est pas vraiment réaliste d’attendre des résultats immédiatement mais je crois vraiment que les joueurs qui arrivent ont en fait de grandes qualités et pourraient potentiellement jouer ensemble.
Hannes Halldórsson, Birkir Már Sævarsson, Ari Skúlason et Kári Arnason ont pris leur retraite internationale récemment, qu’est-ce que cela te fait ?
C’est une perte d’expérience à la tête de l’équipe mais nous avons eu la chance de tous les garder plusieurs années avec les jeunes. J’espère pour l’équipe, qu’ils nous ont donné toute leur expérience. J’espère qu’ils réussiront dans la prochaine étape de leur carrière parce qu’ils ont fait un excellent travail pour l’équipe nationale.
Penses-tu que cela aura un impact, négatif ou positif sur l’équipe dans les mois à venir ?
Oui, bien sûr, ce sont quatre grands joueurs qui partent, mais si nous sommes assez intelligents pour apprendre de ce qu’ils ont apporté à l’équipe, j’espère que nous pourrons recréer ce que nous avons réalisé l’année dernière. Mais nous ne voulons pas recréer, nous voulons le faire à notre manière.
Tu as une marque de vêtement, Pandagang avec Brynjólfur Darri Willumsson, peux-tu nous en parler un peu ?
C’est quelque chose qui a commencé comme une blague. Nous avons décidé de créer des vêtements et d’appeler cela Pandagang ! [rires] Et ça a décollé, ça s’est vendu en seulement quelques semaines. Nous avons donc décidé de créer d’autres lignes et nous avons maintenant un séminaire de football pour Noël et le Nouvel An. Ça devient de plus en plus gros, donc c’est quelque chose de sympa que j’ai à côté. J’essaie de travailler un peu sur certains modèles et de créer des choses que les gens peuvent porter.
Comment vous est venue l’idée de vous lancer ?
C’était complètement l’idée de Brynjólfur, il a commencé par appeler ses amis Pandagang et j’ai juste dit en plaisantant : « nous devrions faire du merchandising ». [rires] Il était d’accord dès la première minute, puis nous voulions simplement créer des vêtements. Et puis ça s’est bien vendu.
Comment gérez-vous votre entreprise sachant que vous êtes tous les deux joueurs professionnels ?
Oui, cela prend un peu de temps, mais Pandagang passera toujours après le football. Donc, nous allons juste passer le temps que nous pouvons y consacrer, mais nous ne le ferons jamais au prix de nos performances sur le terrain.

Qu’est-ce que cette année 2021 t’as apporté en tous points de vue ?
Hmm… 2021 a été une année où j’ai pu m’imposer encore plus comme un bon joueur de Bodø/Glimt. Donc, à la fois personnellement et professionnellement, ça a été une bonne année mais j’ai beaucoup travaillé, donc ce que ça signifie, c’est que si on travaille, on récupère quelque chose, alors on va continuer à travailler ! [rires]
Comment vas-tu occuper tes prochaines semaines, jusqu’à la reprise ?
Je vais passer beaucoup de temps avec la famille et les amis. La plupart de mes amis sont des footballeurs ou ont joué au football, donc je vais beaucoup jouer avec eux ou alors je serai à la salle de sport et puis je resterai tranquillement à la maison. Donc, généralement pour les Islandais, quand on rentre à la maison, on joue ensemble puis on se détend.
Que peut-on te souhaiter pour 2022 ?
Si je continue de travailler comme je le fais actuellement, vous ne pouvez que me souhaiter des choses positives !
Début mars
Deux matchs officiels, deux victoires avec Bodø / Glimt depuis notre dernier appel, vous avez donc éliminé le Celtic, et vous êtes en huitièmes de finale, es-tu satisfait ?
Oui, bien sûr, le Celtic a une super équipe, et ils étaient en forme quand nous avons joué contre eux, mais nous avons pu les battre. Deux belles performances face à eux dans les deux stades, donc ça va être intéressant au prochain tour.
Vous avez la meilleure attaque de Conference League, est-ce une satisfaction pour l’équipe ?
Oh, je ne savais pas en fait, mais oui, nous voulons être une équipe offensive et notre philosophie est d’être portés vers l’avant. Si les chiffres le montrent également, ça fait plaisir à voir !
Vous allez affronter l’AZ Alkmaar la semaine prochaine, penses-tu que vous allez pouvoir les battre et aller plus loin en Conference League ?
Oui, je crois que nous pouvons battre tout le monde si nous réalisons une bonne performance et que nous jouons notre jeu. J’ai vu jouer un peu l’AZ Alkmaar car je connais (Albert) Guðmundsson, l’Islandais qui était là-bas. Je crois que si nous les rencontrons en étant dans un bon jour, et si nous sommes capables d’évacuer la pression et de jouer ensemble, je pense que nous pouvons faire de bonnes choses contre eux.
D’ailleurs comprends-tu le choix d’Albert Guðmundsson de quitter l’AZ Alkmaar pour le Genoa ?
Je pense qu’il voulait être dans un endroit où il pourrait essayer de nouvelles choses et c’est un grand joueur. Ça va donc être très intéressant de le voir jouer avec le Genoa. J’espère vraiment qu’il pourra jouer la plupart des matchs restants. Espérons pour lui qu’il ait pris la bonne décision.
Même si nous sommes loin de la finale, penses-tu que vous pouvez gagner la Conference League ?
Bien sûr, si nous jouons notre jeu et si notre pressing est bon, nous avons l’impression que nous pouvons tenir tête à chaque équipe ! Donc je crois qu’on peut aller jusqu’au bout si la chance est avec nous et c’est toujours facile à dire mais il faut penser « un match à la fois » mais c’est en fait le cas ! [rires] Nous devons juste nous concentrer sur ce match et voir ce qui se passera après.
L’équipe a perdu des joueurs importants mais rien n’a changé sur le terrain, comment expliques-tu cela ?
Notre philosophie ne dépend pas vraiment d’un seul joueur qui sort et tout le système s’effondre. C’est plus, nous avons ces principes dans notre jeu qui sont assez faciles à comprendre et nous faisons de notre mieux pour que tout le monde dans le groupe comprenne son rôle dans l’équipe. Donc, si un gars sort, vous n’avez qu’à en mettre un nouveau et il est censé savoir comment fonctionne le système et quel est son rôle. Je n’ai qu’à féliciter le gars qui est rentré. Ils ont vraiment fait un excellent travail.
Est-ce une satisfaction pour toi de n’avoir aucun remplaçant ou concurrent à ton poste ?
Nous avons bien sûr des joueurs prêts à intervenir si nécessaire. Mais de mon côté, je suis prêt à jouer 90 minutes à chaque match et mes ambitions sont de continuer à me développer et de continuer à jouer autant que possible donc c’est super pour moi d’être dans une position où je peux à la fois beaucoup jouer, développer mon jeu et faire des erreurs. Je suis donc dans une excellente posture ici.
Comment juges-tu tes deux matchs contre le Celtic d’un point de vue personnel ?
Très bien défensivement, nous avions un très bon contrôle sur le Celtic. C’est un peu ce que nous avons mis en place avec ce travail, nous avons dû faire quelques ajustements pendant la mi-temps du premier match. Mais pour le deuxième match, nous avons en quelque sorte suivi le même plan de jeu tout au long du match. En attaque, j’étais assez impliqué, mais ils ont mis beaucoup de gars sur mon côté, donc je ne pouvais pas vraiment attaquer jusqu’au deuxième ou au troisième but. Les contre-attaques n’étaient donc pas vraiment obligatoires pour moi. Mais je suis plutôt content !
En France, une expression dit jamais deux sans trois, penses-tu que Bodø/Glimt pourrait remporter un troisième titre d’affilée ?
Ce serait très amusant et après nos performances contre le Celtic, maintenant vous pouvez voir que nous avons la qualité pour que cela se reproduise. La saison est longue de 30 matchs donc tout peut arriver mais au moins on a réalisé de très bons matchs cette saison. Donc, si nous jouons bien ces matchs et sommes capables de constituer une équipe capable de performer chaque week-end, oui, cela pourrait arriver ! Mais vous devez travailler pour cela.
Je crois que ton petit frère joue pour Bodø/Glimt depuis 2021, peux-tu nous parler de lui et de votre relation ?
Oh oui, c’était une drôle de coïncidence en fait parce qu’il était juste en vacances avec moi et ensuite il a voulu s’entraîner avec l’équipe réserve. Et après cette période d’entraînement, ils sont revenus avec des commentaires. Ils voulaient qu’il vienne et commence à s’entraîner avec l’équipe tous les jours. Il est donc rentré chez lui, y a réfléchi et a décidé de changer d’école pour étudier ici et de changer d’équipe pour Bodø/Glimt. Maintenant, il vit avec moi et joue avec la réserve. Et oui, c’est en fait une coïncidence, mais c’est tellement amusant de pouvoir lui offrir cette opportunité… Pourquoi pas ? Nous avons une grande académie et je pense qu’il peut vraiment se développer ici.
2022 est ta dernière année de contrat avec Bodø/Glimt, sais-tu déjà ce que tu veux pour l’avenir ?
Non, pas vraiment, j’ai un dialogue avec le club concernant un nouveau contrat, mais rien n’est décidé. L’essentiel de l’attention depuis la fin de la saison et jusqu’à maintenant était d’abord porté sur l’Islande pour passer des vacances, puis nous sommes allés directement en Espagne et avons eu une pré-saison avec la préparation des matchs contre le Celtic. Nous n’en avons donc pas vraiment parlé mais je n’ai fermé aucune porte. Je ne leur ai donc pas dit non, mais nous examinons simplement des solutions et nous verrons où cela nous mènera.
Il y a actuellement une guerre en Ukraine et tu as montré ton soutien à l’Ukraine, mais Nikita Haikin, le gardien russe de Bodø/Glimt et peut-être ton ami ne s’est pas senti bien jeudi et n’est pas venu au match, va-t-il mieux ?
Oui, il va bien, mais bien sûr, c’est une période très difficile et c’est difficile pour moi en tant qu’Islandais de comprendre ce qu’il traverse parce que c’est si loin de moi mais si proche de lui. Mais en tant que coéquipier, mon obligation est simplement de bien prendre soin de lui et d’être là s’il a besoin de parler ou s’il a besoin d’aide. Lui et moi sommes de très bons amis donc même s’il est difficile de savoir ce qu’il traverse, je peux être là en tant qu’ami pour l’écouter et en discuter.
Tu dois affronter la Russie en juin, avec l’Islande, que feras-tu, si le jeu est maintenu ?
Euh… Je ne sais pas vraiment quel est le plan, je sais que la fédération islandaise a fait une déclaration disant qu’elle ne souhaitait pas jouer contre la Russie cette fois ni jouer contre un club russe. Mais c’est difficile de dire ce qui va se passer, je pense que la fédération islandaise a un bon plan et prendra une décision qui est juste et je vais simplement les suivre.
Est-ce difficile de prendre position quand on commence à avoir une petite célébrité ?
Non, pas contre ça, je condamne toute guerre donc prendre position contre la Russie et à cet égard, non ce n’est pas difficile parce que je sens que ce qu’ils font est mal. Cela ne fait aucun doute. Mais il est difficile de trouver un moyen d’aider. Bien sûr, vous pouvez donner de l’argent et diffuser un message, mais il s’agit de trouver la bonne façon d’aider.
À la fin du mois, l’Islande disputera deux matches amicaux, contre la Finlande et l’Espagne, qu’attends-tu de ces deux matchs ? Pour l’équipe et personnellement.
Ca va être excitant parce qu’on va en Espagne fin mars pour jouer contre la Finlande et l’Espagne. Je crois que ces matchs vont être très importants pour solidifier notre équipe parce qu’il y a eu beaucoup de va-et-vient en équipe nationale, des joueurs sont arrivés, d’autres ont arrêté. Maintenant, il s’agit de construire une équipe qui va fournir les performances et les résultats dont nous avons besoin, donc nous devons bien utiliser ces matchs. J’espère vraiment que nous pourrons obtenir des réponses aux questions que nous nous sommes posé l’année dernière.
Y a-t-il quelque chose à retenir du rassemblement de janvier avec l’Islande ? Personnellement ?
Ah, c’est difficile de comparer les matchs de janvier à des matchs normaux parce que c’était une équipe totalement nouvelle et nous étions trois ou quatre gars à avoir beaucoup été avec les A donc c’est difficile de juger l’équipe à partir de cette performance. De mon côté, je suis arrivé directement après avoir eu le coronavirus donc je n’ai pas pu jouer le premier match et pour le deuxième match, j’ai dû sortir à cause d’une petite blessure donc je n’ai pas vraiment pu jouer ou beaucoup aider l’équipe sur le terrain mais je suppose que mon rôle dans cette fenêtre internationale était plus d’être là en dehors du terrain pour aider les gars à entrer dans le groupe. Il est difficile de faire un ajustement à partir de ce rassemblement et des résultats, mais c’est toujours agréable de voir que beaucoup de joueurs du match et de l’Islande jouent à un niveau élevé, donc je pense que nous pourrons bientôt jouer à un meilleur niveau.
Ta valeur marchande sur Transfermarkt est désormais de 1,2 million d’euros, est-ce quelque chose auquel tu fais attention ?
[Rires] En fait, je n’en avais aucune idée, mais tu me l’as dit maintenant ! J’ai l’impression que la valeur marchande n’a pas vraiment d’importance si tu as une équipe qui te veut vraiment, elle ira, elle paiera le montant nécessaire. Mais les statistiques à notre sujet disent que nous sommes une très bonne équipe offensive (Bodø/Glimt), c’est toujours bon de voir que des chiffres montrent que tu travailles bien et que tu vas dans la bonne direction. C’est donc amusant à voir mais je n’en avais aucune idée jusqu’à maintenant.Quels sont tes loisirs quand tu ne joues pas au football ?
Mes hobbies… J’adore jouer au golf. Mais j’ai aussi une entreprise à côté, une entreprise de vêtements. Qu’est-ce que j’aime faire ? Je suis à l’école aussi, donc je passe pas mal de temps avec la School Business of Sports, je suis assez occupé.
Alors, qu’étudies-tu ?
J’étudie l’économie. C’est une sorte d’entrepreneuriat à côté, donc je prends beaucoup de cours qui m’aident dans mon entreprise. Et aussi les cours m’aident personnellement juste avec mes finances et dans ma vie comme c’est le cas en ce moment.
Est-il facile de combiner football et études ?
Oui et non parce que j’étudie dans une école appelée « Open University » et ils proposent des études à distance sans avoir à être là. Je peux étudier de n’importe où, n’importe quand, donc ce n’est pas si difficile mais cela prend du temps et de l’énergie. Si tu pouvais choisir un joueur actuel dans le monde, qui choisirais-tu pour jouer avec toi à Bodø ?
Je pense que c’est une bonne question parce qu’il y a tellement de bons joueurs… Si tu imaginais que tu pouvais jouer avec Messi. Pour jouer avec Messi, tu n’as qu’à lui donner le ballon et il créera à nouveau quelque chose ! [rires] Donc je dirais Messi juste parce que ce serait génial de jouer avec lui mais je devrais probablement nommer 5000 joueurs juste pour leur rendre justice [rires] mais oui, je vais dire Messi !
Es-tu superstitieux ? As-tu un rituel avant un match ?
En fait, j’avais l’habitude d’avoir beaucoup de rituels, mais en 2020, quand nous avons commencé à être bons et que nous avons gagné je ne sais pas combien de matchs d’affilée, j’ai fait une sorte de jeu pour essayer de briser nos superstitions avant les matchs. Alors je pense que le seul qui me reste est que je mets toujours le protège-tibia gauche en premier. J’ai arrêté tous les autres.
Quels étaient les autres avant ?
C’était par exemple m’échauffer avec une paire de chaussettes et ensuite en changer. Et je devais avoir le même Under Armour avant le match mais je changeais juste le T-shirt par-dessus l’Under Armour… C’était beaucoup de petits détails, je pense que je me suis convaincu que ça me faisait bien performer. Mais au final, c’est seulement moi qui joue, ce ne sont pas les vêtements ou certaines circonstances.

Vous avez éliminé l’AZ Alkmaar la semaine dernière et vous retrouverez l’AS Roma, que penses-tu de ce tirage ?
Du tirage au sort… C’est assez amusant, ça va être très amusant de les affronter à nouveau parce que nous avons eu de la chance dans les bonnes performances des dernières fois. Alors j’espère que nous pourrons rééditer notre performance et en espérant qu’ils aient un peu peur de venir à Bodø mais nous verrons.
Tu as marqué le but de la victoire et de la qualification, pourquoi étais-tu à cet endroit du terrain à ce moment du match ?
Je me souviens bien, j’ai fait un underlap run (course vers l’intérieur) et le ballon a été passé à un ailier et j’étais au milieu du terrain juste pour compenser et être une option de jeu puis il a essayé de centrer. Ils l’ont détourné et tout d’un coup, j’étais juste autour de la surface de réparation, des 16 mètres et il a de nouveau récupéré le ballon, il allait centrer, alors je me suis dit : autant aller dans la surface ! Et heureusement, c’était un bon centre et j’étais en excellente position !
Qu’as-tu ressenti lorsque tu as marqué ?
C’était incroyable parce que nous avons eu du mal dans ce match et pour inscrire le but là-bas, juste avant la mi-temps de la prolongation… J’ai bien célébré, c’était très drôle.
Ce week-end tu étais capitaine pour le match contre Lillestrøm, je crois que c’est la première fois avec Bodø/Glimt…
J’ai déjà été capitaine lors de matchs amicaux mais c’est la première fois en match officiel.
Était-ce une conséquence de ton but de jeudi ou ça n’a pas de rapport ?
Non, je ne pense pas, c’est plutôt parce que notre capitaine a eu des minutes de repos donc il était sur le banc. Quelqu’un d’autre a dû prendre le brassard et l’entraîneur m’a demandé si j’étais partant pour le faire, donc je suppose que c’est une combinaison d’être très bien intégré à la culture et de sentir que je suis un joueur en qui ils peuvent avoir confiance, donc c’était très bien !
C’est déjà une grosse responsabilité d’être capitaine à seulement 23 ans, est-ce que ça te met la pression ?
Je dirais oui et non, cela n’ajoute pas vraiment de pression pour jouer mais je dois être plus en mesure de garder l’équipe sur les bons rails et de garder notre concentration sur nos objectifs. Je n’avais pas d’expérience en tant que capitaine à Bodø/Glimt, vous avez la responsabilité de faire le dernier discours avant de sortir… J’avais donc quelques nouvelles choses à faire.
Quelles étaient tes responsabilités supplémentaires pour ce match contre Lillestrøm ?
J’ai fais le discours final avant de jouer, et ma responsabilité était de rassembler tous les gars. J’ai juste mon rôle dans l’équipe, mais en tant que capitaine, j’ai des objectifs supplémentaires, mais c’est principalement lié au maintien de la concentration de l’équipe.
Quels sont les objectifs dans les deux compétitions restantes (Conference League et Coupe de Norvège) ?
Oui, tout d’abord, nous devons recommencer à analyser la Roma et nous assurer que nous pourrions… Peut-être pas les surprendre parce que je ne pense pas que nous puissions les surprendre à nouveau mais leur tenir tête. Si nous sommes dans notre match, je crois vraiment que nous pourrions nous qualifier mais nous devons beaucoup travailler en amont. Donc, le premier objectif sera de bien se préparer et ce sera un match intéressant, puis nous affronterons Viking en coupe nationale et je jouerai contre ce gars, mon colocataire (en sélection, Patrik Gunnarsson). Nous allons les jouer fin avril donc c’est difficile de penser à toutes les compétitions à venir, c’est beaucoup plus facile de penser à la prochaine rencontre mais ça va être une période amusante je pense.

This third episode of Career Tracking is devoted to the results of his 2021 season, his stay in Paris in December, Bodø / Glimt’s career in the Conference League, his clothing brand…
Mid December
You were on vacation in Paris last week and you attended the PSG – Breiðablik match in the Women’s Champions League, was it important for you to be present ?
Yeah, Breiðablik is my home club where I grew up so of course I’m come to show up and once they play in the Champions League so it’s a big stage for the women.
Did you meet any Breiðablik players before or after the meeting ?
Yeah I know a few of them since I was a kid and the goalkeeper is the best friend of my girlfriend so we met up some of them in the downtown and yeah we went to hanging out but it was more like we met up and chat with them, we were just on our own way.
What do you remember from your trip to Paris ?
It was a great trip, with a lot of things to see, like the Eiffel Tower, the Catacombs… It’s a beautiful city where I’ve never been up before, so it was fun to see.
Last week, many Icelanders were in Paris, how do you explain this love for France ?
I think a big part was the game. A lot of people come up to watch the game and look at the city at the same time. It’s like a beard man and a younger wish with their girlfriend which is completely a coincidence, we didn’t plan it before but it is easy to travel and the restrictions weren’t that many. It’s just like show the covid pass and go around the city. So it’s a combination of a lot of things but it’s a beautiful city so it was fun to see !
While we’re in France, Patrick Berg has just signed for RC Lens, in Ligue 1, does that make you want to play in France too ?
Yeah, it would be fun ! We will of course have to find a club that suits me like in Patrick’s case I think, Lens suits him very well. I’m not seeing that many games but I’ve seen one won game. and I feel like their midfield do the things like he’s very good at, so he’s gonna be a good addition to their team I think.
You were at the stadium with Jón Dagur Þórsteinsson and Ísak Bergmann Jóhannesson. Jón Dagur was in Grenoble a few days before, do you think he could play in France in a few months ? Knowing that his contract at Aarhus ends in June.
I don’t know, it would be fun ! I didn’t really ask him about it but if that was the reason of the trip, it would be fun, but I don’t think so. I think he was just on vacation but if there was a second agenda, that’s fun… haha !
You seem to be very appreciated with young and old players, is that important to you ?
Yeah of course, but a lot of the guys are just players which I played with before or I know from the pitch so a lot of are just my friends. So it’s nice to be appreciated as well !
There seems to be a great solidarity between the Icelandic players, do you agree with that ? If so, how do you explain it ?
When I was younger, for example, me and Jón Dagur (Þórsteinsson), we were at school together and we were very close each other. Every time we we were go out to play football. He was usually there so I’ve been playing football with him since I was a kid. So most of them are just my friends and it’s a plus to have them as teammates as well.
In Norway there are a lot of Icelandic players, what do you do when you face them ? Do you talk to them before the match, after the match, exchange your jersey ?
Usually we just chat after the game and I know most of them so it’s always nice to speak Icelandic for a couple minutes.
You won the Eliteserien with Bodø/Glimt for the second consecutive season, how did you experience that? Was it different from last season ?
It was really fun, this season was quite different. Last year, we were mainly an attacking team and we were able to dominate teams at a high level. This year it was a bit different, we dominated games in another way, we were more solid defensively but there were some challenge. Losing some players and gaining some new players but keeping the same system. It was a fun experience and I was happy to be able to done it.
For the second season in a row, you have the best defense in the championship, is it a satisfaction for you or you have not paid attention ?
Yeah when you’re a defender, that’s always something that you look at, it’s not really something that media notices but when you’re looking at yourself and you know you’re doing a good job, it’s pleasant. But it’s the result of hard work and a lot of discussions in the video room haha ! It’s always fun to see good performances defensively as well.
Kjetil Knudsen was extended until 2024 when he was at the end of his contract in 2022, does that reassure you for next season or does it not matter to you ?
That’s huge for both me and the club to have the trainer or the coaching team on longer. It’s just gonna help us to continue the journey grew up. To continue to grow up as a team and as a player ; him and Morten Kalvenes (assistant coach) are there for many.
Can you tell us how you experienced the 6-1 against AS Roma ? Before the game, during and after.
Yeah, before the game we knew they were a good team, but we weren’t really sure what to expect. So we just wanted them to the game with that goal to play our game, not to have changing anything that we do. And we started the game by keeping the ball in the team for two minutes and get a half chance. And that’s the first time that you get the feeling, you know what : « We can hurt them, we can hurt them tonight » ! Haha, and then we just kept going and at the end we scored six goals and conceding one ! So it was a good day job but I would say it’s the result of playing our own way instead of adjusting to do something that’s defensive against them.
How did you approach this game from a personal point of view ?
We worked by approaching this game like any other. We knew we had to be on our top level because one against one these players are extremely good. So it was really important to be at my top level when I was facing El Shaarawy. So I just had to be at my best and play where I’m good at !
Is it the the best game of your life ?
One of the most fun games of my life at least. The game home and away, we did very good but as a team we worked very well together so personnally it was a good game. I think as a team, it was an amazing performance.
Is it a disappointment to have finished second in view of your course during this group stage ?
Hmm… Disappointed maybe not. Yeah you can always look back and say : « What if we got the goal against CSKA Sofia, what if we scored there or not conceded there ». But in total it’s six good performances even if the sorts could have been a little bit better. Now we’re through and we’re gonna face Celtic so it’s gonna be a fun game ahead.
You have played sixteen games in a row in their entirety with Bodø / Glimt, since September 26, how do you manage to keep up with this rhythm and remain at 100% despite the sequence of matches ?
Yeah it’s a result of hard work, we were very well trained and we work a lot on recovery. So it’s mainly about what you do between games and keep your focus on your form. I feel like I’m that be trained but I can’t play three games a week. Of course it gets stuff sometimes if you run into a difficult game and your body is tired afterwards but just a quick jump and you’re ready for next game.
You will lose players before facing Celtic, you will come out of a big cut, have you already mentioned this double confrontation?
Err… No, not really, the Celtic’s game we have discussed a little bit because it was the drawn gamebut but not really into detail. Everybody just had the mind on resting a little bit but we’re gonna speak when we meet up in January.
Are you happy with this draw ?
Yeah, it’s gonna be fun, I hope there will be a lot of fans in the stadium !
How will the team prepare for these two games ?
Err… Not really 100% sure but I guess we go to Marbella or Portugal or something just to get away from the cold weather in Bodø right now and hopefully play a couple of training games before we go. It’s just gonna be quite normal, just train a lot and then get back the shape, so it’s not gonna be any drastics measures. Doing what we are doing because it’s working right now.
Let’s talk about the selection, in September, the coach fielded a team with an average age of 28.6 years against a team of 25 years of average age in November. Has the mood changed with such a great rejuvenation within the team ?
Yeah, it’s like we do not talk about it as the federation change is going on. Youngs are coming in, old guys are going out, it takes time and it’s not really realistic to expect results immediately but I really believe that players who are coming in actually have high qualities and could potentially play together.
Hannes Halldórsson, Birkir Már Sævarsson, Ari Skúlason and Kári Arnason recently retired internationally, what does that do to you?
It’s a lack of experience leading in the team but we were lucky to keep them all for several years with the youngs. Hopefully for the team they gave us all their experience. I hope they’ll do well in the next step of their career because they’ve done a great job for the national team.
Do you think this will have an impact, negative or positive on the team in the coming months ?
Yeah of course, it’s four great players who leave but if we are smart enough to learn from what they have get to the team, hopefully we can recreate what we’ve achieve last years. But we don’t want to recreate, we want to do it in our own way.
You have a brand of clothing, Pandagang with Brynjólfur Darri Willumsson, can you tell us a bit about it ?
It’s just something that started as a joke. We decided to create some clothes and call it Pandagang haha. And it’s took off, sold out just in a couple weeks. So we decided to create some more lines and now we have a football seminar for Christmas and New Year. It’s getting bigger and bigger so it’s just a fun thing I have on the side to work a little bit on some designs and try to create some things that people wear.
How did you come up with the idea of getting started ?
Absolutely and mainly Brynjólfur’s idea he started out calling his friends Pandagang and I just said jokingly like : « we should create some merch ». And haha he was on board from the first minute and then we just wanted create some clothes. And then sold out.
How do you run your business knowing that you are both professional players ?
Yeah it takes a little bit time away from Pandagang but Pandagang is always gonna come second to football. So we’re just gonna spend out too much time as we can spare to it but we’re never gonna do it on expensive on football.

What has this year 2021 brought you from all points of view ?
Hmm… 2021 has been a year where I’ve been able to establish myself even more as a top player. So both, personnally and professionally, it’s been a good year but I put in a lot of work so what it tells me is if we put in the work then we get something back so just gonna keep putting in the work haha !
How are you going to occupy your next weeks, until the resumption ?
It’s gonna be a lot of time with family and friends. Most of my friends are football players or have played football so it’s gonna be a lot just play around with the ball or in the gym and hanging out at home. So usually for Icelanders, when we go home, it’s just a lot of playing around together and then chilling.
What can we wish you for 2022 ?
If I keep putting in the work then you can wish me good !
Beginning of March
Two official games, two wins with Bodø / Glimt since our last call, so you have eliminated Celtic, and you’re in round of 16, are you happy with that ?
Yeah, of course, Celtic has a great team, and they were in form when we played against them so we were able to beat them. Two strong performances against them in both stadiums. So it’s gonna be interesting into the next round.
You have the best attack in Conference League, is it a satisfaction for the team ?
Oh I didn’t know actually but yeah we wanna be an attacking team and our philosophy is to be attacking. And if the numbers show that as well, that’s very fun to see !
You will face AZ Alkmaar next week, do you think you could beat them and go further in Conference League ?
Yeah, I believe we can beat everybody if we have a good performance and we play our game. I’ve seen AZ Alkmaar play a little bit because I know Guðmundsson, the Icelandic who was there. And I believe if we meet them in a good day for us, and if we’re able to get out pressure, and to play together then I think we can do good things against them.
Besides do you understand the choice of Albert Guðmundsson to leave the club for Genoa ?
I think he mights have been in a place where he wanted to try new things and he’s a great player. So it’s gonna be very interesting to see him playing with Genoa. I really hope he gets to play most of the remaining games. Hopefully it was a good decision for him.
Even if we are far from the final, do you think you could win this European competition ?
Sure, if we play our game and if our pressing sits well, it feels like we can give every team a match ! So I believe we can go all the way if the odds are in our favor and it’s always classic to say but we have to thinking « one game at the time » but it’s actually the case haha ! We just have to focus on that game and let’s see what happen after that.
The team has lost important players but nothing has change on the pitch, how do you explain this ?
Our philosophy doesn’t really depend on one guy going out and the whole system crumbles. It’s more, we’ve got these principles in our game that are quite easy to understand and we do our best to have everyone in the group to understand their role in the team. So if a guy goes out and you just have to put a new one in and he’s supposed to know how the system works and what his role is. And I must give some compliments to the guy who came in. They really did a great job.
Is it a satisfaction for you to have no substitute or competition for your position ?
Of course we have players that are ready to jump in if needed. But from my part, I’m ready to play 90 minutes every game and my ambitions are to continue developing and continue playing as much as possible so it’s great for me to be in a position where I can both play a lot and develop my game and make mistakes. So I’m in a great position here.
How do you judge your two games against Celtic from a personal point of view ?
Yeah, quite well, defensively we had very good control over Celtic. It was kind of what we set up with that work, we had to do some adjustments. During half-time of the first game but the second game we kinda went through with the same plan all along. On attacking wise, I was quite involved, they overlooked a lot of guys over my wing so I couldn’t really attack much until the second or the third base. So the counter-attacks weren’t really my obligation to take. But I’m quite happy, yeah !
In France an expression says never two without three, do you think Bodø / Glimt could win a third title in a row ?
That would be very fun and from the performances against Celtic now, you can see that we have the quality to make it happen again. The season is 30 games so everything can happen but we’re at least getting very good games this season. So if we use those games well, and are able to build up a team that can perform every week-end, yeah, it could happen ! But you have to work for this.
I believe your little brother play for Bodø / Glimt since 2021, can you talk about him and your relation ?
Oh yeah, it was actually a funny coincidence because he was just on a vacation with me and then he just wanted train with the reserve team. And after that period of training day came back with feedback, that they wanted him to come and started to train with the team everyday. So he went back home, thought about it, and he decided to change his school to studying here and change teams to Bodø/Glimt. Now he’s living with me and playing with the reserve. And yeah it’s actually been quite a coincidence but it’s so fun to be able to get that opportunity for him… Why not ? We have a great academy and I think he can really develop.
2022 is your last year of contract with Bodø / Glimt, do you already know what you want for the future ?
No, not really, I have a dialogue with the club regarding a new contract, nothing has been decided. Most of the focus from the season end and until up to now. First I was in Iceland just having a vacation and then we went directly to Spain and had a pre-season with the preparation for the Celtic’s games. So we haven’t really brought it up but I haven’t closed any door. So I haven’t said no to them but we’re just looking at some solutions and we’ll see where it takes us.
There is actually a war in Ukraine and you have shown your support to Ukraine, but Nikita Haikin, the Russian goalkeeper of Bodø / Glimt and maybe your friend didn’t felt good on Thursday and didn’t came to the game, is he good actually ?
Yeah, he’s doing okay but of course it’s very difficult times and it’s hard for me as an Icelander to understand what he’s going throught because it’s so far away from me but so close to him. But as a teammate, my obligation is just to take good care of him and be there if he needs to talk or if he needs some help. Me and him are very good friends so even if it’s hard to know what he’s going throught, but I can be there as a friend to listen him and discuss it.
You have to face Russia in June, what will you do, if the game is maintained ?
Err… I don’t really know what the plan is, I know the Icelandic federation came up with a declaration saying they’re not interested in playing against Russia this time and to play against a Russian football team. But it’s hard to say what’s gonna happen, I just gotta believe that Icelandic federation has a good plan and will make a decision that is right and I will just follow them.
Is it difficult to take position when you’re a bit famous ?
No, not against this, I condamn any war so to take a position against Russia and this regard, no it’s not hard because I feel that what they are doing is wrong. There is no doubt about that. But it’s difficult to find a way in which I can help. Of course you can donate money and spread a message but it’s all about finding the right way to help.
At the end of the month, Iceland will play two friendlies, against Finland and Spain, what do you wait of these two games ? Team and personnally.
Yeah, it’s gonna be exciting because we go to Spain at the end of March to play against Finland and Spain. I believe that those games are gonna be very important in solidifying our team because it’s been a lot of back and forth with the national team, players in, players out. Now it’s all about building a team that is gonna deliver those performances and results that we need, so we gotta use these games well. So I really hope that we can get some answers to the questions that we got last year.
Is there something to retain of the January’s gathering with Iceland ? Personnally ?
Ah, it’s difficult to compare the January games to normal games because it was totally a new team and we were three or four guys who have been there a lot so it’s hard to judge the team from that performance. From my part, I arrived directly after having coronavirus so I was not able to play the first game and the second game, I had to go off with a small injury so I didn’t really get to play or help the team much on the pitch but I would guess my role in that window was more to be there outside of the pitch to help guys get into the group. It’s hard to make an adjustment from that one window and the results but it’s still nice to see that a lot of the guys of the played and Iceland is playing at a high level so I think we can take a step into bigger league soon.
Your market value on Transfermarkt is now 1.2 million euros, is it something you pay attention ?
Ahah actually, I had no idea, but you told me now ! It feels like market value doesn’t really matter in regards if you have a team that really want to, they will go, they will pay the money needed. But statistics about us are saying we are a very good attacking team, it’s always good to see numbers that supports you’re working well and you go to the right direction. So it’s fun to see but I had no idea to now.
What are your hobbies when you don’t play football ?
My hobbies… I love to play golf. But I also have a business on the side as a clothes company. What do I like to do ? Yeah or I’m actually in school as well, so I kind of feel my time with School Business of Sports, so I’m quite busy.
So what are you studying ?
I’m studying towards economics. It’s kind of entrepreuducing on the side so I’m taking a lot of courses that helping in my business. And also courses are helping me personnally just with my finance and in my life like this right now.
Is it easy to combinate football and studies ?
Actually no because I’m studying from a school called Open University and they offer distance studying without having to be there. So I can kind of study from wherever, whenever so it’s not that difficult but it takes time and energy and I try to have the load just right so it keeps me occupied but it doesn’t take away from my focus on football.
If you play at FIFA, do you take Bodø / Glimt or Iceland to play with you in your team ?
Haha, I rarely play at FIFA but if we are at the hotel and we play a game, I might take Bodø/Glimt or Iceland just because it’s fun. But you also have the classics to play like Premier League games or Bundesliga or something.
Are you satisfied of the ranking, the note, you have on FIFA ?
What is it ? I don’t actually know.

I think that’s a good question because there are so many good players out there and… If you imagine, if you could play with Messi. To play with Messi, you could just giving him the ball and he’s gonna create something ever again ! Haha ! So I think I would have to say Messi just because it would be amazing to play with him but I would probably have to name like 5000 players just to do them justice haha but yeah, I’m gonna say Messi !
Are you superstitious ? Do you have any ritual before a game ?
I actually used to have a lot of rituals but 2020 when we started to do quite well and we won I don’t know how many games in a row I made a kind of a game to try to break our superstitions before the games so I think the only one I have left is that I always put on the left shin pads on first. I broke the rest of them.
What were the others before ?
It used to be like I had to warm up in one pair of socks and then I had to change. And I had to have the same like Under Armour on before the game but I would just change the T-shirt over the Under Armour… It was just like a lot of small details, I thought I conviced myself that were making me perform well. And at the end of the day, it’s just me that’s performing, it’s not the clothes or some out there circumstances.

You eliminated AZ Alkmaar last week and you will face AS Roma again, what do you think of this draw?
Of the draw… It’s actually quite fun, it’s gonna be very fun to face them again because we had some luck in the good performances last times. So hopefully we can recreate again and hoping either a bit scared to come to Bodø but we’ll see.
You scored the goal of victory and qualification, how come you were there at that moment of the match?
I remember correctly, I went on a so-called under lap and the ball was passed out to a winger and I came out to the middle part of the field just to fill up and be an option to play and he tried to cross. They headed it away and all of sudden now I was just around the 16 meters box and he got the ball again, he was gonna crossing so I was like : might as well go in the box ! And luckily it was a good cross and a great position for me !
How did you feel when you scored?
It was amazing because we have been struggling in that game and to get the goal there, right before half-time in the extra-time… I would get to celebrate quite well, it was very funny.
This weekend you were captain for the game against Lillestrøm, I think it’s the first time with Bodø/Glimt…
I have already been captain in friendlies games but it’s the first time in official game.
Was it a consequence of your goal on Thursday or is it unrelated?
No, I don’t think so, it’s more because our captain was getting some resting minutes so he was on the bench. Someone else had to step up and the coach asked me if I was up for it so I guess it’s a combination of being very well integrated at the culture and just feel like I’m a player they can trust so it was very nice !
It’s already a big responsibility to be captain at only 23 years old, does that add pressure to you?
I would say yes and no, it doesn’t really add pressure to play but I have to be more responsible for keeping the team on the right track and keeping our focus aligned with our goals. I wasn’t experienced as a captain in Bodø/Glimt, you get the responsibility to make the last speech before we go out… So it was a couple new things that I had to do.
What were your additional responsibilities for this game against Lillestrøm?
I was doing the final talk before we play, and my responsibility was to get all the guys around. I just have my role in the team but as a captain I have extra goals but it’s mainly connected to keep the focus of the team.
What are the goals in the two remain competitions (Conference League and Norwegian Cup) ?
Yeah first of all, we just gotta start analyzing Roma again and make sure that we… Maybe not surprise them because I don’t think we can surprise them again but give them a proper game. If we are in our game then I really believe that we could go through but we have to put a lot of work beforehand. So, first focus is gonna be to prepare very well and it’s gonna be an intresting match and then we play Viking in the domestic cup and I’m gonna play against this guy, my roommate (Patrik Gunnarsson). We’re gonna play them at the end of April so it’s hard to think about all the competitions that are ahead, it’s much easier to think about the next one but it’s gonna be a fun period I think.
